The Indian VFX industry is growing at a faster pace. It has become a crucial part of film making. The VFX work carried out by the Indian Studios and creative artist have brought India on an international platform. The recent Tamil movie, ROBOT 2.0, starring two Indian cinema superstar Rajnikant and Akshay Kumar, has turned this belief into reality. Kudos to the Director Shankar for reimagining and giving a magnanimous, larger than life character for the Indian cinema.

ROBOT 2.0 | SHANKAR BLOWS YOUR MIND & MOVES YOUR HEART ONCE AGAIN

Robot 2.0 breaks all the previous records in the Indian film industry. Ever since the launch of the trailer Robot 2.0 has created a buzz and sensation among the movie lovers. The film received tremendous audience response at the box office similar to what we saw during the Baahubali. These movies have transformed the overall audience experience in India and around the world. According to FICCI report 2018 “The Tamil-language sci-fi thriller “2.0” is reportedly one of the most expensive films in the history of Indian cinema and has used a substantial amount of VFX. The filmmakers have identified 1,000 shots from the film and used 10 different VFX companies”.

VFX GROWTH in INDIA

The Indian animation and Visual Effects industry is gaining momentum and acceptance throughout the world. India has become one of the sought after destination for entertainment and Storytelling. Hollywood and other foreign production houses are outsourcing their VFX projects to India. This in turn creating a new and fresh market for Indian creative talents. At the same time VFX is marking a presence in all the genres of Indian film be it Sci-fi, action, comedy and any other field. Thus, creating more career opportunities and recognition to the India talents. Indian movie industry is going through a paradigm shift and it is encouraging regional cinema to join the race, in fact it is the regional cinema, who are spearheading this crusade. Movies like Bahubali (Telegu), Robot (Tamil), I- (Tamil) have created a new buzz and a health competition with Bollywood.

VFX GROWTH in INDIA

The Indian presence in the global animation and VFX industry is less than 1% (FICCI & EY report). However, this is expected to grow at a faster pace in the coming years. Indian animation studios are moving up in the value chain and have also created their own IPRs. Sony, Walt Disney and Warner Brothers have started outsourcing animation characters and special effects to Indian companies. Even small firm start-ups are able to strike a deal with foreign movie companies because of their passion for creativity and art. As per the FICCI & EY report, “India has become a popular destination for foreign production houses to outsource 3D animation projects and is increasing its market share in the segment. Indian animation studios are increasingly developing content for global consumers via online platforms such as Apple iTunes, Android, Netflix and Microsoft store”.

To boost the same, the Indian governments have launched several project to join this race and make India a competitive and creative destination, for example:
  • The government of Maharashtra have allocated land for setting up the National Centre of Excellence for Animation, VFX, Gaming and Comics
  • The government of Karnataka in its education policy has included digital art education in curricula of certain fine arts schools
  • Telangana is planning to set up an incubation centre in Hyderabad and have announced/planned policies in support of the animation industry.

These initiatives supported by the Indian government will definitely act as a catalyst to the Indian animation industry to effectively compete with established and emerging markets of the world be it US, Canada South Korea, China, Malaysia etc.
